1785 → 1794 Condorcet worked out the mathematics of collective choice in 1785, arguing that reason could settle how a society decides. Nine years later a collective decided against him: outlawed during the Terror, he was found dead in a cell at Bourg-la-Reine two days after his arrest, by means still disputed. he never saw the paradox that carries his name become a design constraint.
